SUMMARY:Families over Fear: We Say No to Public Charge - December
DESCRIPTION:On October 10\, 2018 the Trump administration introduced a proposed rule change to expand the criteria for what counts as Public Charge. Public Charge allows the government to deny immigration status to people who may be dependent on certain forms of public assistance. Currently only a small number of programs (TANF\, SSI and long-term institutional care\, such as Medicaid coverage for nursing home care) makes someone inadmissible. The proposed rule would expand the number of government assistance programs what would make an immigrant a “Public Charge.” The expanded definition would include programs such as non-emergency Medicaid\, housing assistance such as Section 8 housing vouchers\, and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)\, and even assistance for seniors who need help paying for Medicare part D (prescription drugs). This will impact many of our most vulnerable community members. \nThe new rule could force immigrant families to choose between permanent legal status and their ability to access basic needs like healthy food\, safe housing\, and health care. \nThis proposed rule is not about making immigrants self-sufficient. It is to prevent many immigrants\, who have built this country\, from becoming legal permanent residents. It is part of a series of attacks on all immigrant communities and their children here. \nBring your lunch and join us at one of the two brown bag lunches to learn more about the proposed rule. Beyond learning\, we will help you draft comment letters that can be submitted on-site or taken back to your organization for review and then sent to the federal government. \nIf there is good news\, it’s that we can do something to stop this proposed rule. That something is to voice our objections to this proposal. \nDon’t be silent when we know our communities will be hurt by this. The Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) joined hands with other AAPI organizations across the country to oppose this rule change. \nJoin us to get at least 100 letters written by the community to the Administration. \nIf you cannot attend the brown bag\, you can submit a public comment letter at: https://aapiprogressiveaction.salsalabs.org/publiccharge-individual/index.html \nResources:\nImmigrant Law Center of Minnesota\nhttps://www.ilcm.org/latest-news/changes-to-public-charge-rule-background/\nhttps://www.ilcm.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Public-Charge-Community-Forum-Handout-FINAL.pdf\nOne Nation AAPI\nhttps://www.onenationaapi.com/resources-1/\nProtect Immigrant Families\nhttps://protectingimmigrantfamilies.org/faqs/ \n
